Sea Of Thieves - Intro, Tips, Tricks & Tidbits Part 1

I have been playing Sea of Thieves, or SOT for short, for a bit of time now. While I cannot say that I have mastered everything about the game, and certainly am not an expert at it, I can say for sure these are some tip and tricks that I have learned ever since playing the game. Some of these are personal opinions while others are well known. I am just hoping that these help shed some light on anyone who might be new to the game or have been playing a while but have not explored these areas yet.

The Game In General

One thing you MUST know before going into SOT. The game is build around player versus player, also known as pvp.

So when going in do not expect others to play nice. In my early gaming I tried giving everyone the benefit of the doubt and I let my guard down all of the time. It got to the point that I just could not do anything because I was being sunk because of my unearned trust. After a while I chose to give people a chance, but be ready for any incursions that might occur on the seas. So now I have a little saying.

"I am like a mirror on SOT. You're nice to me, I'm nice to you. You ignore me and I will most likely ignore you. You attack me and your sunk."

Also remember, even if you have an alliance flag up, that does not stop people from being crude and joining it just to tack you down. So once that flag is up you are taking a chance. But, don't be afraid of making an alliance because they are very beneficial and a good way to meet and make new friends on SOT.

If you enjoy pvp, then go for it. Sometimes you will come across salty-sams while other times you will have the most epic battle! Remember if you think the other crew did a good job, rather you won or not, give them a "good game" in their DMs. That is the sporting way of doing it, and who knows, you might make a friend that way too!

Reputation & Commendation

In SOT there are many places to go and many places to be. There are goals to meet while you sail the seas looking for booty to sell. This being the case, there are several locations in where you sell most of these luxurious items and a few areas where you can earn commendations from.

The Gold Hoarder

The Gold Hoarder is one of the first 3 main groups that is in SOT. He is the shady little man in the green tent counting his coins and is willing to give you some treasure seeking missions. There will be one of two types of mission pages he can give to you, an x-marks-the-spot or a riddle. When you walk up to him ask to see his stock and there will be a list of missions that you can buy from at the bottom. Starting out your standing with him will be at level 0 and all of the missions that you buy from him will be the lowest level quests you can buy from him. You will be lucky if any of the quests he gives you at this point give you more than a few hundred gold!

But don't fret, once you are level 5 in reputation with you can go back to his stocks and just above the missions that her sells to you is a promotion that you can buy for pretty cheap. You can get a new promotion every 5 levels until you reach level 50 with this group.

Now what comes with these promotions? One thing for sure is that any missions that you buy from then on will be missions of greater value, based on your title with him. Another neat thing is that you can buy exclusive skins that you can only get as you get high standing with him. Lastly, it gets you one step closer to Pirate Legend, one of the ultimate goals of SOT.

The Merchant Alliance

The Merchant Alliance are a bunch of woman that you can find on the same dock as the shipwright. These straight-laced ladies will hold you to some time-limited adventures to gather stuff around the world and deliver it to their specified goal. Back in the time SOT was still young this was the way to go in getting leveled up and getting the best bang for you buck. You would go around collecting golden animals and selling them for a good price, but that is ancient history now.

To get your missions or promotions here you will do the exact same thing as you would with the Gold Hoarder. Also, just like the Gold Hoarder, the max level with this group is level 50.

What do these missions entail? The Merchant Alliance can offer one of two types of missions. One being a cargo run, where you go to a specific person and take the cargo from them. Look at the cargo to know where you need to go and deliver it to that location before the time runs out. I find they give you between five to six in game days to do so. The second mission that they can dole out to you is a check list that will tell you to gather specific animals, canon ball crates, fruit crates or gunpowder barrels to deliver to a specific location in time. To be able to capture the animals you will need specific cages made for them, which you can get from The Merchant Alliance lady that you bought your mission from.

Are you interested in know what day or time it is? Go to your equipment wheel and to the second page. There will be a pocket watch and you can tell the time like a normal watch, and at the bottom will be a number telling you the day.

-- Fun fact - The Kraken howls at exactly 3am and 3pm every day --

The Order of Souls

The Order of Souls is the third main group that was added early on in SOT. They are a group of mysterious, creepy, fortune tellers that like to get high off of bone dust and rituals. Don't let them fool you into thinking they care about people, they like breaking in souls of the damned to learn their secrets more.

Once again, to get your missions you will do the same as The Merchant Alliance and The Gold Hoarder and walk up to once of these ladies and ask to brows their stocks. Their max level is also level 50.

The missions they give you on the other hand will always be the same. Go out to a specific island and slaughter some nasty skele-bob and bring back his skull to give to her. For the longest people wondered what they did with the skulls but if you talk with them, or even do the second Tall Tail you will see what they do. Better than weed in their opinion.

The Hunter's Call

The Hunter's Call is one of the newer groups added. You cannot find them at Outposts, but only at Sea Posts, small tiny islands where you can also find small shops that sell 3 random things from the game at a discount price and refreshes every so often. So don't forget to visit them often when you have money to save a pretty coin or two.

In order to appease The Hunter's Call you have to sell them food, not just any food though. The only accept fish, shark, kraken and animal meat. How do you acquire these delectable?

  • You can get 1 pork from killing a pig.

  • You can get 1 chicken legs from killing a chicken

  • You can get 1 snake meat from killing a snake.

  • You can get 1 kraken meat per kraken tentacle you kill.

  • You can get 1-4 megalodon meat from killing a meg.

  • You can get 1 shark meat from killing a shark.

  • The fish are fished using the fishing rod and sometimes bait.

  • Everything listed can be found in floating barrels and shipwrecks.

One thing to note is that when you are selling them stuff you cannot sell them raw meat. You can however sell raw fish, but at a reduced price and reputation. So to get the best bang for your buck with anything you sell them, make sure that you cook everything. As a long time player of this game I can tell you that this group is the hardest to level up.

-- Down below is a couple of images that I am sure will help you --

The Sea Dogs

Now this is a pvper's dream. It is also good to catch a 30 minute game before you have to leave the house. For you to even be able to do this you cannot join in Adventure mode. you MUST start your game in Arena mode. This game mode itself is much different than if you were in Adventure mode for several reasons. One, it is a quick paced game mode that only lasts up to 24 minutes. No more, no less. Second, it is focused on pvp.

There are two types of ships you can play on here. The galleon, which is a 4 man crew, or a sloop, which is a 2 man crew.

How do we play this?

  1. Killing a player will get you 5 points.

  2. Hitting a cannonball shot will get you 25 points.

  3. Digging up a chest will get you 100 points.

  4. Delivering a chest will get you 1000 points.

  5. Getting your ship sunk will loose you 1000 points.

You may be wondering, where do you deliver the chests once you dig them up? You deliver them to one of the two ship outposts. They will have a red smoke above them and you can see them on the map as the Sea Dog's crests. Also note, when you spawn you will spawn with quite a bit of supplies, so supplying right away is not something to worry about. Another thing is that when you spawn in, you spawn with your anchor down. Bring it up as soon as you can move so that you are not a sitting duck.

At the end of the game is when your commendations and gold is rewarded.

Tips & Tricks

  • Use your microphone. Communication in a game mode like this is key - but don't get too close to enemy teams. They will be able to hear your plans too, that is unless you are in another call.

  • If you are not comfortable to use the microphone, don't forget that you have Pirate Speak and Emotes that you can use.

  • Sometimes charging blindly into battle isn't not the best idea. Wait for enemies to get off of the ship to dig up chests before sweeping in to take them out.

  • Or, if you are the bold type, hop in a cannon yourself and take out the enemy crew pirate to pirate.

  • Make sure everyone on your crew has a responsibility. It will make battles much easier if one person is navigating while the others are fighting.

  • Always have a steady stock of cannonballs and planks on hand. While you do start with a good amount, you will be running through them like water. So every time you get or a crew mate gets on land or an enemy ship stock up your inventory with their precious materials.
